Research Title: Rare Earth Elements (REEs) Recovery and Hydrochar Production from Hyperaccumulators
Research Story: Phytomining uses special plants to extract rare earth elements (REEs) from contaminated soil. However, the processing and reutilization of REE hyperaccumulators after hyperaccumulation remains a challenge. 95% of REEs can be extracted from grass leaves using sulfuric acid. The leftover biomass can be converted into energy-rich fuel and a low-cost adsorbent through microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization (MHTC). By applying MHTC directly, nearly 100% of REEs are recovered into biocrudes (liquid product), along with high-energy solid fuel obtainment. Further processing of biocrudes recovers over 97% of REEs and 94.4% of phosphorus into value-added products, making this approach highly efficient and sustainable.
Why did you choose the Department of Mining and Minerals Engineering at Virginia Tech?
I chose the Mining and Minerals Engineering Department at Virginia Tech because of its strong reputation in the field. I read a lot of excellent literature in the mining area published by Virginia Tech during my master's and bachelor's study periods, which made me finally choose to study my PhD here.
How did you get interested in mining?
I became more interested in mining because I found that lots of valuable products widely used in advanced technologies can be produced through mining engineering. Our work is meaningful and relied on for the development of society. I want to try my best to contribute to the development of society.
What are your career aspirations after completing your degree?
I hope to become a professional engineer in the industry.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
As a PhD student, dedicating the majority of time to research can be demanding, especially when the results may not always be as expected. That's why finding activities that offer relaxation is essential. For me, cycling is a great way to unwind; physical exercise helps me release stress and maintain a sense of balance.
What's your favorite place you have traveled?
I love visiting Korea, especially for the vibrant shopping experiences and incredible concerts. The bustling markets and trendy boutiques offer a unique mix of traditional and modern styles, while the energy at live performances is always unforgettable. It's the perfect combination of culture, entertainment, and fun.
What's your favorite meal to eat or cook?
The acai bowl, a popular dish originating from Hawaii, is a refreshing and healthy treat made from blended acai berries and topped with a variety of fruits, granola, and sometimes honey or coconut flakes. Its vibrant colors and delicious flavors make it a favorite choice for breakfast or a snack, especially for those looking for a nutrient-packed meal with tropical flair. Whenever I don't have much of an appetite for a full meal, I always have an acai bowl.
