Research Title: A Search for Rare Earth Elements from an Unconventional Resource
Research Story: My research begins with an end-stream product, acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is the result of the reaction of air, water, and pyrite. AMD is often acidic enough to leach metals, including Rare Earth Elements(REEs), from surrounding rock and earth. AMD is regulated by the government and requires neutralization before being released into the environment. This process of neutralization precipitates REEs and other metals into a solid. My research focuses on chemical processes that can be used to extract the REEs from the precipitation solids.
Why did you choose the Mining and Minerals Engineering Department at Virginia Tech?
I completed my bachelor's degree at Virginia Tech before working in industry for four years. I decided to return to complete my graduate degrees with the department that I began my career with.
How did you get interested in mining?
I have always been interested in rocks and geology, but I learned about mining engineering while researching engineering departments in high school. I figured it would be a great fit to combine my interest in rocks with a practical engineering degree.
What are your career aspirations after completing your degree?
To become a professor of mining engineering and to help lead the next generation of mining engineers into a future of innovation in the field.
What advice do you have for future graduate students?
The journey will be challenging, make sure to have a solid support network of friends and family
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love all things outdoors from hiking to exploring the local farms and wineries! When I am not outside, I enjoy weightlifting, baking, and reading historical fiction.
What's your favorite place you have traveled?
Capri, Italy is my favorite place I have ever traveled! The food was amazing and the culture was wonderful to experience. There were actually some really cool caves and rock formations too!
What's your favorite thing about Virginia Tech?
The Hokie spirit that makes everyone feel welcomed and part of the Virginia Tech community
