Research Title: Protecting Miners, Strengthening Mines: Better Backfill Strength Testing

Research Story: My research focuses on improving strength testing of cemented paste backfill, a key material used in many mines worldwide. Underground mines use backfill to stabilize mined-out areas and ensure miner safety. Current methods for testing backfill strength often provide inaccurate results that don’t match actual underground conditions. By developing a new method called hydraulic fracturing, we can assess backfill strength directly inside the mine, offering more reliable data than current practices. This innovation helps mining companies design safer and more efficient backfill systems, reducing collapse risks and protecting miners, contributing to a stronger, safer future for the industry.

How did you get interested in mining?

I grew up in Ghana, a country with a lot of valuable metals, but I saw how unsustainable mining activities can hurt the environment. My father's lands and farms were damaged because of unsustainable practices. I decided to pursue a career in mining to learn how to mine in a way that is good for both the economy and the environment.

What are your career aspirations after completing your degree?

I aspire to work as a geotechnical/geomechanical engineer in a mining company. I want to apply the knowledge and skills I have gained through my academic and research experiences to real-world mining operations, helping to improve mine safety and stability.

What's the best piece of advice you have been given for starting graduate school?

The best piece of advice I have received about being in graduate school is to stay focused on my goals and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Graduate school can be challenging and demanding, but it's essential to prioritize self-care and find time for activities outside of research.

What advice do you have for future graduate students?

My advice for future graduate students is to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and development. Don't be afraid to ask questions and learn from your professors and peers. Most importantly, stay passionate about your work and remember the potential impact your research can have on the field and society as a whole.

What is a fun fact about yourself that most people don’t know?

A fun fact about myself that most people don't know is that I am actually quite a comedian. Despite often being perceived as quiet, shy, and boring upon first impression, I have a great sense of humor and love to make people laugh.
