Research Title: Modeling Microbial Activity during Underground Hydrogen Storage

Research Story: My research explores the role of methanogenic archaea, sulfate-reducing bacteria, and acetogenic microbes in underground hydrogen storage environments. These microbes influence critical factors like pressure, temperature, and gas composition, potentially compromising storage integrity through hydrogen consumption and byproduct formation. This microbial activity can degrade both the quality and quantity of stored hydrogen. Despite the significance of these interactions, our understanding of how microbial activities intersect with biogeochemical processes in storage environments remains limited. Gaining insights into these processes is key to optimizing hydrogen storage systems for long-term safety and efficiency.

Why did you choose the Mining and Minerals Engineering Department at Virginia Tech?

My passion for contributing to sustainable energy solutions led me to apply to Virginia Tech. After exploring the department's research, particularly the work of Dr. Bahareh Nojabaei (my advisor), Dr. Ryan Pollyea, and Dr. Nino Ripepi, I saw a clear alignment between my background in petroleum engineering and the department's focus on sustainable energy. Their research connects directly to the energy industry's need for sustainable solutions, whether in mining or the use of fossil fuels, making Virginia Tech the ideal place to advance my goals in this field.

What are your career aspirations after completing your degree?

My aspiration is to become a specialist in sustainable energy production for both the oil and gas and mining industries. Rather than working directly in the mining industry, I aim to use my expertise to consult on sustainable practices, helping companies in these sectors transition toward cleaner energy solutions. My long-term goal is to establish my own consulting firm, guiding businesses in both industries toward more efficient and environmentally friendly operations. With Nigeria’s abundant resources, I also plan to play a significant role in advancing sustainable practices within its mineral and energy sectors.

What advice do you have for future graduate students?

Take a chill pill, take things easy, YOLO lol. While graduate school can be demanding, it’s important to balance your academic work with fun activities like sports, entertainment, or anything that brings you joy. Don’t let the stress of research overwhelm you. Find time to relax, and remember that your happiness and well-being are just as important as your studies

What is a fun fact about yourself that most people don’t know?

I actually used to dance ballet while growing up

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love cooking, playing sports, dancing, going to the gym, and playing the violin.

What's your favorite place you have traveled?

New Orleans, Louisiana. I’ve been there twice, and I keep wanting to go back. The food is incredible, and as someone who loves trying different dishes, NOLA offers a food lover’s paradise.

What's your favorite meal to eat or cook?

Stir fry pasta with fried turkey.

What's your favorite thing about Virginia Tech?

My favorite thing about Virginia Tech is that it feels like a home away from home. The sense of community is strong, which makes it a welcoming and inclusive environment. The campus is calm and peaceful, offering a great atmosphere for both study and personal growth. I also appreciate the efficient transport system, which makes getting around easy for everyone, whether you're a student or not.
