Research Story: My research focuses on optimizing blast operations in mining through machine learning analysis of "Measure-While-Drilling" data collected from drilling sensors. Studying these patterns enhances the efficiency and safety of blasting, which is a critical aspect of mining. This approach is expected to improve blasting efficiency, reduce operational costs, and minimize environmental impact, contributing to more sustainable mining practices. The goal is to develop smarter solutions that make mining operations more effective and safe for workers.

Why did you choose the Department of Mining and Minerals Engineering at Virginia Tech?

I was drawn to Virginia Tech’s Mining and Minerals Engineering Department because of its close ties to the mining industry and strong research foundation. The department's emphasis on practical applications and collaboration with industry partners provides an ideal environment for me to pursue impactful research as a graduate student.

How did you get interested in mining?

It all started when a friend who had just begun studying mining told me about the field’s amazing prospects. He raved about how interesting the coursework was, and his passion for it was contagious. That conversation stuck with me, and it wasn’t long before I found myself drawn to mining, eager to explore the exciting opportunities it offers.

What are your career aspirations after completing your degree?

I aspire to work in the mining industry, focusing on improving operational efficiency and safety using data-driven approaches, particularly in automation and optimization.

What advice do you have for future graduate students?

Stay curious, build strong relationships, and embrace challenges. Graduate school is a growth journey, so persevere through setbacks and keep learning all through it.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I enjoy watching soccer in my free time, especially when my favorite team, Liverpool, plays. I also take the opportunity to explore new places whenever I travel to conferences, which allows me to unwind and experience different environments.

What's your favorite meal to eat or cook?

My favorite meal is Jollof rice, a traditional Ghanaian dish that reminds me of home.
