Research Title: Innovative Near Real-Time Monitoring for Safer Underground Coal Mines

Research Story: Have you ever heard of black lung disease? This serious condition, also known as coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, primarily affects coal miners due to prolonged inhalation of coal dust. My research focuses on developing an innovative monitoring tool designed to detect and characterize coal mine dust in real-time. Utilizing portable optical microscopy combined with advanced automated image analysis, this tool will provide miners and employers with crucial information about the types and concentrations of airborne particles. This real-time data will enable quick and informed decisions to mitigate workers’ exposure to respiratory hazards, ultimately fostering a safer and healthier working environment.

Why did you choose the Mining and Minerals Engineering Department at Virginia Tech?

I first learned about Virginia Tech during my junior year as an undergraduate, thanks to an exchange program between my school and VT. Several of my classmates participated and returned with glowing reviews. Inspired by their experiences, I began exploring graduate school options during my senior year. My mentor recommended Virginia Tech and introduced me to my current boss.

How did you get interested in mining?

My dad was an agronomist. I remember him coming home after his field trips with muddy boots and stained clothes, but always bringing presents for my mom, sister and me. Ever since then, I’ve wanted to be just like him—cool and working in the earth sciences, getting dirty in the field. Mining Engineering seemed a good fit for what I wanted.

What's the best piece of advice you have been given for starting graduate school?

One of the best pieces of advice I received for starting graduate school is to create a strong network of support. Graduate school can be challenging and having a reliable support system can make a significant difference. This includes not only academic mentors and advisors, but also peers who understand the unique pressures of graduate studies.

What is a fun fact about yourself that most people don’t know?

Last year, out of the blue, my roommate asked if I wanted to officiate his wedding. I was incredibly honored, but it was very short notice. I quickly registered as a wedding officiant and completed a crash course in the month I had left. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. Since then, I’ve been looking for more opportunities to use my title as a wedding officiant. So, if you’re planning to get married, let’s talk!

What's your favorite meal to eat or cook?

My mom always made chicken lasagna for special occasions like birthday parties and when we had special guests. I have so many fond memories associated with this dish at home. It was originally my dad’s recipe, but my mom perfected it. Before I left home, I made sure to learn it, and I hope to continue improving the recipe and eventually teach it to someone else.

What's your favorite thing to do around Blacksburg?

I really enjoy outdoor activities, which is why I love Blacksburg so much. There are so many great opportunities to explore nature here. One of my favorite activities back home was going to the river and cooking something delicious with my family. Every time I go tubing on the New River during the summer, it feels like home. That’s why it’s my favorite thing to do in Blacksburg.
