Virginia Tech Mining and Minerals Engineering Class of 2018 students took first place in Carlson Software’s annual Senior Design Competition. Corey Hauck, Morgen Leake, and Clay Metcalf earned First Place for their project, Tri-Agg, a proposed 625,000-ton per year aggregate quarry in southeast Pennsylvania.

The first place project received an award of $2,000 as well as a certificate for each student documenting their achievement. The department will be presented with a plaque to display this year’s first place win. Teams from the University of Nevada, Reno, and West Virginia University took 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.

Carlson Software produces CAD design software, field data collection, and machine control products for the land surveying, civil engineering, construction, and mining industries worldwide and has a been a proud supporter of the mining academic community for over twenty years through its annual competition.
