In early March of 2020, student members of the Virginia Tech Bryan Smith Aggregates Society headed to Las Vegas, Nevada, to attend the 2020 CONEXPO-CON/AGG, which is the nation’s largest construction trade show featuring the latest equipment advances and newest technologies for the construction and surface mining industries.

During the four-day visit, students attended workshops, met with industry representatives while hosting a department booth at the expo, and got to see some of the most advanced heavy equipment and machinery used in the construction and mining industries. A highlight of their tour was seeing how companies like Trimble, Hilti, and Boston Dynamics are designing robots for these industries.

The department’s Bryan Smith Aggregates Society is the student chapter of the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA) and is one of the program’s most popular student organizations given an increase in student interest in the aggregates industries. The Society is geared towards members’ professional development, technical knowledge and industry networking.
